Weather conditions and the quality of fishing keep isolating on a daily bases in the ocean state.
Haven’t fish the bay, but filtered reports suggest some fish in the upper Providence River where many live liners have had some marginal success. Smaller stripers continue to provide action along the ocean front of Newport casting plugs and flies. Same holds true along the mid-bay island, but drift fishing structure has been problematic with all the stronger winds.
Off shore, the North Rip, Block Island continues to show no good signs of life. Usually this time of year the rip is going strong with good reports, but the absent of sand eels and squid in the currents along the bar have yet to materialize. The fishing for fluke remains good, maybe the best fishery at the island right now. Many six pack charters resort to bottom fishing much earlier in the day rather than burn fuel needless trolling pulling wire and tiring out arms.
Captain’s Log:
Elliott Detchon was in town from Trumbull, Connecticut on Tuesday morning heading out to Block Island on a fly fishing adventure. He got that and more landing the largest striper on a fly to date. Talk about risk and reward? Elliott is no stranger to island waters having fished there last summer with his friend Norman. Talk about some bad luck weather wise. Both trips produce high surf and strong winds, making fly fishing too difficult to even stand inside the pulpit never mind casting a line. Risk and reward would be appropriate as the boat was pushed around like a wash cloth inside a washing machine. Those turbulent conditions brought the sand eels to the surface produce some dynamic conditions resulting in his largest fish. Congrats Elliott on a great fish and wonderful fight. Leveraging a large striper in the rip is no easy task, especially on fly gear.

The fly fishing gang from East Hartford, CT. consisting of Gary Steinmiller, Norman Davidson, Ted Rzepski, and Joe Klinger had a banner day Thursday out at the island and the mainland. Every year the gang gets together for their annual fishing trip here in RI where Joe and Pat Klinger graciously entertain the men and woman at their summer house in Pt. Judith. We at Cast a Fly are thankful for their fun day of fishing and friendship on the water.
Conditions at the island finally settled down with blue skies, low wind and calm seas. They were treated to some good top water action in the early morning hours with keeper size stripers tailing and boiling on scattered smaller sand eels. The mainland also produces some steady action for more than two hours chasing silverside to the surface during the waning tide. Thanks to Captain Rene of On the Rocks for helping supply the second boat for all to fish and have fun during the entire day. Good time by all. Can’t wait till next year.
